The Alexander Technique

By SARAH LANSDOWN

The legacy of Table Cape's Frederick Matthias Alexander will live on as followers of his famous technique gather on Sunday to celebrate 150 years since his birth.

Alexander Technique teacher Penny McDonald said 15 teachers from all over Australia would demonstrate the technique at Wonders of Wynyard.

"This technique he came up with is phenomenal and amazing and has helped a lot of people around the world.

"A lot of Tasmanians don't know he was born here."

The Alexander Technique is a method of controlling the body and habitual behaviour to improve breathing and deal with stress.

It had huge uptake in the performing arts, with actors Dame Judi Dench and Hugh Jackman keen followers of the technique.

At the celebration on Sunday, Historian Dr Ian McFarlane will talk about the history of Mr Alexander and a family tree will show the lineage of the Alexanders.

There will even be a big birthday cake.

• The 150th birthday event is on 3pm, January 20 at Wonders of Wynyard.
