Performing Arts and the Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique is found in most performing arts institutions around the world because it teaches the performing artist presence, connection, breath and listening. If they use their bodies and minds well they create great art.
Why is it important for actors, singers, and musicians?
Sustainability
As performers, your body is your instrument. It needs regular nurturing, warming up, tuning, and practice to ensure longevity in singing, acting, playing an instrument, and public speaking.
Authentic Storytelling
Performers are storytellers, often portraying complex characters or conveying heavy material in songs. Taking an audience on a challenging journey can be difficult if you have tension in your work or if you portray characters as victims. To truly honor the writer and their story, the performer must be present, listening with their entire body, breathing freely, and without unnecessary tension.
